Core Characteristics

  • Beam Steering and Image Rotation: As an isosceles right-angle prism, the Dove prism enables 90° beam steering through two internal reflections when light enters the hypotenuse. When the prism rotates around the optical axis, the outgoing image rotates synchronously at twice the prism’s rotation angle, making it a key component for precise control of beam direction and image attitude.
  • No Phase Shift Advantage: Unlike other steering prisms, the Dove prism’s two reflection processes do not introduce additional phase shifts, ensuring a stable polarization state of the beam, ideal for polarization-sensitive optical systems.
  • Compact Structure and Integration: Its single-prism design eliminates the need for complex assemblies to achieve beam steering and image rotation, helping simplify optical system architecture and reduce device size and weight.
  • Material Versatility: Available in materials such as quartz, BK7, and sapphire, it meets broadband transmission requirements from ultraviolet to infrared bands, with excellent mechanical strength and environmental resistance.

Typical Applications

Optical Communication

  • In optical path switching modules of fiber-optic communication systems, the rotation character of Dove prisms enables rapid optical alignment and switching, ensuring stable, low-loss signal transmission.
  • Used in optical module testing equipment to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of optical power testing and insertion loss measurement by precisely controlling beam direction.

Laser Industry

  • In laser processing equipment (e.g., laser cutting/welding machines), rotating Dove prisms adjust the laser beam’s incident angle to achieve flexible control of processing trajectories, especially for complex curved or irregular workpieces.
  • In LiDAR systems, beam steering expands the detection field of view, while image rotation compensation eliminates image distortion during scanning, improving ranging and imaging accuracy.

Precision Optical Instruments

  • In optical measurement devices (e.g., interferometers, spectrometers), it guides beams and adjusts attitudes to ensure coaxiality and stability of measurement light paths.
  • In remote sensing imaging systems, it compensates for image shifts caused by platform vibration via rotation, maintaining the geometric accuracy of remote sensing data.

Selection Guidelines

  • Material Selection: Based on the working wavelength of 350–2000 nm, BK7 Grade A optical glass is recommended. For ultraviolet or high-power laser applications, alternative materials such as quartz or sapphire should be considered.

  • Dimensional and Precision Parameters: Determine the clear aperture (>85%) based on system optical path requirements. For this specification, the angle tolerance is ±3 arc minutes, surface quality is 40/20 scratch/dig, and surface figure is λ/4 @ 633nm, which are suitable for general optical systems where moderate beam scattering and aberration are acceptable.

  • Coating Requirements: Anti-reflective (AR) coatings are recommended to reduce reflection loss within the 350–2000 nm band. For high-power laser applications, laser-damage-resistant coatings should be used. Coatings can be customized according to customer requirements.

  • Environmental Adaptability: In high-temperature, high-humidity, or vibrating environments (e.g., industrial laser equipment), ensure that the selected materials and processes provide adequate temperature stability and impact resistance for long-term reliability. BK7 is suitable for standard environments; for harsh conditions, consider fused silica or other stabilized materials.
