Finely Polished Polarizing Beamsplitter Plate (PBS Plate)

A polarizing beamsplitter plate is a high-precision optical component that divides the incident light into transmitted light (P light) and reflected light (S light), according to the polarization state of light. The PBS beamsplitters are increasingly in demand for use in laser systems, optical measurements, interferometers, optical communication modules, and scientific research experiments due to their efficiency in optical power distribution and polarization control.

Features

  • High power tolerance: laser damage threshold ≥10 J/cm²@10ns
  • High polarization contrast:P light transmittance >98%, S light reflectance >99.5%
  • High optical accuracy: surface flatness λ/[email protected] nm, parallelism ≤3″
  • Stable structure: flat structure, the optical path is stable, and not offset after installation
  • Multi-wavelength options:532nm, 633nm, 780nm, 808nm, 1064nm, 1550nm

Working Principle & Structure

A multi-layer dielectric polarization film is coated on the surface of the PBS parallel optical plate to achieve polarization-selective reflection and transmission. When light is incident vertically or at a specific angle:

  • P-polarized light is transmitted almost completely.
  • S-polarized light is partially or almost fully reflected, depending on the scale of the membrane design.

The structure applies the principle of polarization-selective reflection for effective energy distribution and is suitable for polarization control modules, interferometry, and power monitoring. Hobbite adopts an IBS or E-beam evaporation process to achieve dense, low-absorption layers stable even under high-power operation.

Design Considerations

  • Wavelength matching: The coating should be strictly according to the operating wavelength of the system
  • Angle of incidence control: Variations from the design angle will affect performance
  • Polarization dependence: Selection of the right type of PBS for polarization-sensitive systems
  • Coating durability: For high-power applications, IBS coatings are recommended
  • Thermal stability: The material must have a low coefficient of thermal expansion
  • Surface cleanliness: Any contamination or scratches can lead to scattering and absorption damage
