Right Angle Prism High Precision Reflection and Beam Folding

Right Angle Prisms are highly versatile optical components used to bend, invert, or retroreflect light with exceptional precision. Their 90° geometry and carefully engineered surfaces enable multiple optical functions—including reflection, total internal reflection, and beam folding—within a compact and reliable design.

Feature:

  • Precision 90° geometry supports accurate beam redirection, inversion, and folding
  • High transmission with low distortion for stable optical performance
  • Advanced surface flatness and sub-micron polishing ensure minimal loss and reliable alignment
  • Manufactured in BK7, fused silica, and other premium optical materials
  • Custom dimensions and AR coating options available for seamless integration into complex optical systems

Application: Imaging and projection systems, laser alignment, periscopes, optical metrology, and photonic devices requiring compact, precise beam manipulation.

1. Stable Optical Structure

The right angle prism features a 90° triangular cross-section with two perpendicular reflecting surfaces and one base surface for light incidence and exit. When light enters perpendicularly, it undergoes two total internal reflections (TIR), resulting in precise 90° light deflection. Alternatively, it can achieve 180° light reversal or image flipping under specific orientations.

2. High-Quality Imaging Performance

The Right angle prism maintains the polarization and phase integrity of the light beam while offering low reflection losses and minimal optical distortion. Within the critical angle, total reflection is achieved without additional coatings, ensuring both simplicity and stability.

3. Versatile Applications

Right angle prisms are used in a wide range of optical systems:

  • Optical Instruments: Telescopes and microscopes for image erection; spectrometers for beam steering.
  • Laser Systems: Acts as beam steering mirrors or components in laser resonators.
  • Metrology and Sensing: Used in optical rangefinders and interferometers to manipulate beam paths.
  • Projection and Display: Ensures correct image projection alignment.
  • Military and Aerospace: Essential in periscopes and remote sensing systems for precise optical redirection.

4. Material and Environmental Adaptability

Common materials include K9 glass (for visible light) and UV-grade fused silica (for UV or high-precision systems). For harsh or high-vibration environments, materials like sapphire can be used, and anti-reflective or high-reflective coatings can be applied depending on the application and incidence angle. Low thermal expansion materials ensure performance stability in varying temperature conditions.
